Maple Leafs’ David Kampf Helps Czechia to Stunning Upset Over Sweden, Advancing to World Hockey Championship Final

Kampf scored a goal and added an assist to help the Czechs advance.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward David Kampf is going to play for a championship in his home country.

Kampf scored a goal and added an assist to help Czechia defeat Sweden 7-3 to advance the final at the IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship.

Kampf’s goal came late in the first period while his team was down 2-1 to Sweden. He waited in the slot and buried a pass from Martin Necas.

Kampf’s assist came on the game-winner when Necas quickly shot the puck off Kampf’s faceoff win in the offensive zone.

Kampf finished the game with a +4 rating. The Toronto Maple Leafs player has been one of the top players on the team as he sits in a tie for the team lead at +8 and has one goal and five assists in eight games at the tournament.

It’s the first time since 2010 that Czechia has been in the final of the tournament. They defeated Russia that year to win the tournament. Former Maple Leafs forward Ondrej Kase also had a goal and assist in the big win.

With the loss, Pontus Holmberg and Sweden will play for a bronze medal. The Leafs’ center wasn’t much of a factor in the game finishing with no points and just one shot on goal.

The championship game is on Sunday in Prague.
