The New Orleans Saints had a workmanlike approach to the 2024 NFL Draft and spent most of their picks on the necessary, yet unglamorous positions to help fortify a foundation for a team that was unstable last season on both sides of the ball.

The Saints selected tackle Taliese Fuaga 14th overall out of Oregon State and Alabama corner Kool-Aid McKinstry with the 41st overall pick while using more late picks to fortify the trenches, but the one risky big-name selection the team made caught everyone’s eye and has had the attention of one analyst for a while.

Analyst Greg Cosell appeared on The Ross Rucker Podcast and shared his thoughts on new Saints QB Spencer Rattler, calling him “fascinating” and called him a “higher-level arm talent” and an “effortless thrower.”

“I don’t think he has a natural sense of timing and anticipation,” Cosell added while saying there was no question about his ability to throw the football as a big-time arm talent with a “compact, explosive delivery.”

Rattler was selected by the Saints in the fifth round and will have the opportunity to sit and learn behind Derek Carr.

Taysom Hill is the primary backup and Nathan Peterman is also on the roster, so Rattler will likely be able to develop for a few years, which he could use after his erratic and at times tumultuous college career.

Cosell highlighted how Rattler was the top QB recruit out of high school but wound up transferring from Oklahoma to South Carolina after No. 1 pick Caleb Williams took his starting job.
