Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs lost to Indianapolis (Pirates), 6-1.

Thomas Pannone started and took the loss after allowing six runs on five hits over five innings. All six runs scored in the top of the first inning thanks in part to two home runs—a solo shot and a grand slam. Pannone walked four, hit one batter and struck out six.

Keegan Thompson pitched the sixth inning in a rehab assignment. He gave up a two-out double, but retired the other three batters he faced. Thompson did not have a strikeout.

Iowa only had two hits in this game, both singles.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies reeled in the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Marlins), 3-2.

Trey Stupak started and gave the Smokies four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Jake Rendl took the mound to start the fifth inning and was awarded the win for reasons beyond my comprehension other than Stupak didn’t go five. Rendl retired the first two batters he faced, but then loaded the bases on two hit batsmen and a walk. Jeff Belge then relieved Rendl and balked in one of the inherited runners. So Rendl allowed one run on no hits over two-thirds of an inning. Belge retired all four batters he faced in 1.1 innings without striking any of them out.

Cam Sanders pitched a scoreless ninth and got the save. He allowed one hit, walked no one and struck out two.

Third baseman Matt Shaw hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, his fourth on the season. Shaw went 2 for 5.

Left fielder Yohendrick Pinango tripled and scored in the second inning. Pinango was 2 for 3 with a double, the triple and a walk.

Second baseman James Triantos was 2 for 4 with a walk.

Catcher Pablo Aliendo went 1 for 2 with a double, a walk and a sacrifice fly.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were bitten by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers), 9-8 in 11 innings.

Starter Tyler Schlaffer allowed five runs on six hits over 2.2 innings. He walked two and struck out two.

The South Bend bullpen then kept Wisconsin off the board for the rest of regulation. Aaron Perry was particularly good, retiring all 12 batters he faced over four innings. Perry struck out four.

After the teams traded runs in the tenth inning, Carlo Reyes came on to pitch the top of the 11th and got the loss. Reyes allowed three runs—all unearned thanks to an error—on just one hit. Reyes did not have a walk or a strikeout.

Third baseman Rafael Morel hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, his second on the season. Morel was 1 for 4 and he was hit by a pitch.

Right fielder Parker Chavers was 3 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. Chavers scored twice.

Second baseman Pedro Ramirez was 2 for 6 with a double. He scored one run and drove in one.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans filleted the Carolina Mudcats (Brewers), 8-7.

Pelicans starter Alfredo Romero didn’t make it out of the second inning after allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits over 1.1 innings. Romero did not record a strikeout or a walk.

Vince Reilly got the win in relief. Reilly allowed one run on two hits—one of which was a solo home run—over two innings. Reilly did not walk or strike anyone out, but he did hit one batter.

Shane Marshall threw the final two innings and got the save. He allowed one run on one hit—a one-out solo home run in the ninth. Marshall struck out three and walked one.

Catcher Frank Hernandez went 2 for 5 with two runs batted in—one for each single. Hernandez scored one run.

Right fielder Jacob Wetzel was 1 for 2 with three walks and two steals. He scored one run.
