Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs lost to Indianapolis (Pirates), 18-6.

Thomas Pannone has been good this year, but tonight he had his worst start of the season, giving up six runs, four earned, on five hits over just two innings. Two of those five hits were two-run home runs. Pannone walked two and struck out no one.

Daniel Palencia faced three batters in a rehab appearance. He walked the first one, struck out the second one and walked the third one. One of those walks came around to score.

Center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a monster solo home run in the third inning. Crow-Armstrong went 2 for 5 with two runs batted in.

Shortstop David Bote was 3 for 5 with two doubles and a solo home run in the sixth inning. Bote scored two runs.

First baseman Matt Mervis homered with the bases empty in the ninth inning, starting an I-Cubs comeback that fell just 12 runs short. Mervis went 1 for 4 with a sacrifice fly and two total RBI.

Right fielder Owen Caissie was 2 for 5 with a stolen base and one run scored.

Left fielder Alexander Canario went 3 for 5 with a double.

DH Brennen Davis was 2 for 4 with one run scored.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies speared the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Marlins), 3-0.

Chris Kachmar started and surrendered four hits over 4.1 innings. He struck out four and walked two.

The Cubs signed Trey Supak out of the independent Atlantic League and he made his Cubs’ organizational debut for the Smokies tonight. It was a good one as he got the win after two scoreless innings of relief. Supak gave up one hit, a two-out triple in the seventh. He struck out one and did not walk anyone.

Frankie Scalzo Jr. pitched the ninth and got the save. He allowed one hit. Scalzo struck out one and did not walk anyone.

Left fielder Kevin Alcántara hit a two-run double in the third inning. Alcántara was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Third baseman Matt Shaw drove in the other run with a fifth-inning single. Shaw went 2 for 4 with a stolen base.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs cut down the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers), 7-1.

Drew Smyly started this game in a rehab assignment. He pitched three innings and retired all nine batters he faced. Smyly struck out five of them. He threw 40 pitches and 27 of them were strikes.

Aaron Perry threw the next five innings and got the win after allowing one run on five hits. He struck out three and walked just one.

DH Pedro Ramirez came to the plate with the bases loaded in the third inning and scored all three runs on a triple. Ramirez was 1 for 4.

Catcher Casey Opitz had a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his fourth on the season. Opitz went 1 for 2 with a walk and two runs scored.

In the eighth inning, right fielder Felix Stevens connected for a solo home run, his ninth. Stevens was 1 for 3 with a walk.

First baseman Brian Kalmer went 2 for 4 and scored twice.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans pan-fried the Carolina Mudcats (Brewers), 5-2.

Starter Marino Santy pitched four scoreless innings, giving up three hits. Santy walked two and struck out five.

The win went to Shane Marshall, who pitched the seventh and eighth innings without allowing a run. He gave up just one hit—a leadoff double in the ninth to Cooper Pratt who promptly stole third base—but then he retired the next three batters in order and stranded Pratt on third. Marshall struck out two.

Francis Reynoso walked the first two batters of the ninth inning, but then got the next three hitters to earn the save. Reynoso struck out one.

DH Andy Garriola hit two home runs tonight. The first one was a fourth inning solo shot and the second one came with a man on in the sixth. Garriola has now hit seven home runs this season. He was 3 for 4.

Shortstop Cristian Hernandez went 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. He also stole a base and scored one run. Hernandez is now hitting .304 on the year.

Third baseman Reginald Preciado was 2 for 5 with a stolen base. Both of his singles drove in one run, giving him two RBI on the night.
